âI wondered if you were coming out of there tonight.â Kevin looked up from the book he was reading to Jade and Carter.
âSoapy, sit by me.â Jade patted the cushion on the sectional and snuggled closer to him.
Sophie looked reluctant at first, but she joined them and pulled Carter into her lap when he reached out both hands and grunted.
Twenty minutes later the kids were tucked into their beds. He turned on the night-light in Carterâs room and closed the door.
In the living area, he found Sophie making one of her flavored coffees. âWhatâs the flavor of the night?â He settled on a stool at the island and watched her back as she pulled a mug from the cabinet over her fancy coffee machine.
She held the cabinet door open and glanced over her shoulder. âChocolate raspberry. Do you want a cup?â
âThatâs not a real flavor.â
âOh, itâs a real flavor. Youâre going to love it.â She grabbed another mug for him and set it on the counter. After a few quick pushes, the machine gave a long beep and groaned to life.
âItâs great with shortbread cookies.â
âHow can you eat like that?â He waved off the cookie she offered. âIâm active every day and struggle to keep my activity level high enough to burn off what I eat.â
âStress eating is a thing. Iâm sure Iâll relax soon enough, but tonight Iâm having chocolate raspberry coffee and a shortbread cookie. Or two.â
âIn that case, Iâll take one, too.â He reached across the island for the package of cookies.
Sophie poured their coffee and sat beside him. âTomorrow should be easier for both of us.â
âNot for me.â He popped the rest of the cookie into his mouth.
âWhy not?â
âThe Gran Colina Expo is tomorrow.â
Her eyes grew wide. âThe expo?â
âYes. Itâs this same weekend every year. The store always does a big booth.â
âI know the expo is tomorrow, but I didnât know you were going there instead of being here.â Her voice tightened with every word in spite of her obvious attempts to keep it calm.
âI told you about it the other day.â
She broke the rest of her cookie into tiny bits. âI didnât hear you say you wouldnât be here.â
He shrugged. âI donât know if I said that, but vendors from all over the area are hosting. Itâs one of my biggest promo events of the year. Itâs January. People are starting to think about the spring. Hiking, fishing, all those outdoor things. I go so I can sell them everything they need for that. Itâs a huge deal for my company. I thought you knew.â
âWhy would I just know?â She took the napkin covered in cookie crumbs and tossed it into the trash. She kept her back to him and leaned on the counter with her head down. Her hair hung forward, hiding her face.
He took his mug to the sink. âIâm sorry, Sophie. I canât miss it.â
âWe need to coordinate our schedules.â She didnât look up even though he stood right beside her.
